How the plugin REALLY works - Common MCBans misconceptions

Hi everyone!

Throughout the years, there has been a lot of misinformation spread about the MCBans plugin and its policies. This sticky is to clear up a few of those misconceptions so that plugin discussions can be done with the facts all in order.

-----

Myth:
If a player is banned from one MCBans server, that player is banned from all MCBans servers.

Reality:
MCBans servers operate on a reputation system. If a player is banned from an MCBans server, the player only loses reputation points if the ban is “global” as opposed to “local.” Servers can choose the minimum reputation score needed in order to connect depending on how strict they would like to be, or use the system purely for informational purposes. Servers can also add exceptions to allow specific players to connect anyway.

Myth:
If I use MCBans, the MCBans staff control who is banned from my server.
Reality:
The MCBans staff do not interfere with who is and isn’t banned from your server. We may switch a ban from global to local if it is issued for an invalid reason or if you lose a dispute, but the player remains banned on your server.
We only have authority over the global ban list, not your server’s individual ban list.

Myth:
Server staff can globally ban anyone for any reason.
Reality:
Global bans must be issued for reasons deemed valid in the global ban rules, or they will be switched to local and removed from public view. Servers must be able to provide proof for global bans when prompted in the dispute system, or the ban will be switched to local.

Myth:
MCBans staff can issue global bans from any server.
Reality:
MCBans staff can only interfere with a server’s ban list if it is to switch a global ban to local. This only takes place if the ban is invalid or the ban has been appealed successfully.

Myth:

If I am banned, it is on my record forever, even if the server doesn’t exist anymore.
Reality:
When servers go inactive on the system, their reputation gradually decreases until they are removed from the system, at which point the ban will disappear.

Myth:
Servers gain reputation by issuing bans.
Reality:
Servers only gain reputation from their bans if they are able to provide valid proof.

Myth:
Permabans cannot be appealed.
Reality:
All permabans can be appealed at any time via the support section of the forums.

Myth:
If a server bans me unfairly, there is nothing I can do about it.
Reality:
You can appeal the ban, and the server will be required to provide proof. Even if the time limit during which you can appeal has passed, if you suspect the server has a history of abuse, you can let us know and we will investigate it. If a server is banning maliciously, it will be removed from the system.

Myth:
The MCBans plugin has secret backdoors.
Reality:
MCBans is open source. You can find the code at https://github.com/MCBans/MCBans.

Hope that clears up any questions that newcomers may have!

Happy mining, everyone!

The other day I was looking for this feature, yet I was unable to find it. I checked both the plugin folder and the /mcbans help command, but to no avail. Where can one enter playernames or UUIDs to add them to this list of exception?

They can be added via your servers dashboard on the MCBans site.
From the Dashboard it's Players > Player Exceptions

how do you contact the person who banned you? I got banned and i didn't do it so im not sure what i did?
Jmonter, if the ban is global, create an account on MCBans.com, and follow the steps to verify. Then hover over "my dashboard" and click "my bans." There will be a "dispute ban" button next to any ban you can appeal. Please dispute it within 60 days of the date on which it was issued. You and the server will then be given a chance to work it out between yourselves, and if no resolution can be reached, an MCBans staff member will then either uphold or revert the ban based on the proof provided.

If the ban is local, you'll need to appeal on the server's site, as local bans are not on the MCBans global ban list and therefore we do not control them.

Thanks,
-Kris
